Auditioning and comparing voices

Add voices to Compare and hear them perform the same line side by side before you choose.

Choosing a voice is casting. Compare lets you hear the candidates perform the same line, one after another, before you decide.

Add voices to Compare

In the library, choose Compare on any voice you want to hear. Voices you created from a direction can be added too. Compare waits for a line.

Give them a line

Under Try a line, choose one:

  • From the Script: the character’s real dialogue, each line with its scene and place.
  • Your own line: a test line you type, marked Test line · not added to your script.

See Generating speech from custom dialogue.

Hear them side by side

Choose the line to perform. The same line is performed in every compared voice at once, and the takes appear side by side. Play each one, in any order, as often as you like.

Compare works one line at a time. Try a few different lines (a quiet one, an angry one, a long speech) before you decide; a voice that suits one moment may not suit the character.

If one take fails

If a voice can’t perform the line, its take says This take couldn’t be performed. Nothing was used. Choose Retry for that voice. The other voices stay playable.

Choose

Each compared voice has Use for and the character’s name. Choosing it makes that voice the character’s voice. The other compared voices stay in Compare until you clear them, so you can change your mind.
