Creating a voice for a character

Choose a voice from the library, or describe one and let Voice Studio create three versions to choose from.

There are two ways to give a character a voice: choose one that already exists, or create one from a description.

Choose a voice from the library

  1. Open the character’s profile and choose Choose a voice (or Open Voice Studio).
  2. Browse the library. Each voice shows its name, a one-line description of its character, and its accent, register, age and quality.
  3. Narrow the list with the filters, such as Quality or Accent.
  4. Play a voice’s sample to hear it.
  5. Add the voices you like to Compare, then try them on a line. See Auditioning and comparing voices.

While the library loads, Voice Studio shows placeholder rows. It never shows a stale list.

Create a voice from a direction

  1. In Voice Studio, choose Create a voice.
  2. Write a direction: how the character sounds, as you would describe them to a casting director. For example: low, unhurried, with a coastal edge; warm, but tired of being polite. The field grows as you type.
  3. Choose Create voice.

Voice Studio creates three versions in place. Each version is a possible voice for the character, not a take. Add any of them to Compare and try them on a line.

You can choose Stop while the versions are being created. If you stop, nothing is created.

Then choose one

When you have heard enough, choose Use for and the character’s name on the voice you want. See Saving and changing a character voice.

Good to know

  • The library offers stock voices only. Voice Studio doesn’t clone voices from recordings of real people.
  • A character can have one voice at a time. You can change it whenever you like.
  • Groups of characters don’t have a single voice, so Voice Studio isn’t offered for them.
