Creating Characters

Scriptr adds the characters who speak in your screenplay automatically. You can also create a character yourself and build their profile.

Characters Scriptr finds for you

As you write in Script, Scriptr reads your character cues. A character who speaks, such as MARCUS, is added to Characters with the scenes they appear in. Nothing is added to your screenplay text.

If Scriptr gets something wrong, your correction wins: a character you rename, merge or delete stays that way when you keep writing.

Create a character yourself

  • In Characters, select + Character, type a name and select Create.
  • In Story, type / and choose New Character.

The new character’s profile opens.

What a profile holds

  • Primary Look: one defining image (Choose a defining image).
  • References: more images for texture and context.
  • What We Know: facts about the character. Facts you write are kept apart from what Scriptr or Co-writer infer.
  • In the Film: where the character appears in your Story and Script.
  • Relationships: connections to other characters, in your words.

Images you add are private to the project. They never change your manuscript.

Rename, merge or delete

Open ⋯ on the profile:

  • Rename: lines in your screenplay that Scriptr has linked to this character follow the new name. Prose you wrote by hand is never rewritten.
  • Merge with…: combine two profiles that are the same person, such as MARCUS and MARC.
  • Delete permanently: removes the profile. Words already in Story or Script stay as ordinary text. This cannot be undone.
