Supported import formats
Script imports Fountain and screenplay text. Story imports text and Markdown. Final Draft, PDF and Word cannot be imported yet.
| Format | Extensions | Imports into |
|---|---|---|
| Fountain | .fountain, .spmd | Script |
| Plain text | .txt | Script or Story |
| Markdown | .md, .markdown | Story |
| Pasted text | (paste into the import box) | Script or Story |
The limit is 2 MB per import, which is far larger than a feature screenplay in Fountain.
Not supported yet
- Final Draft (
.fdx). Export Fountain from Final Draft, then import that. - PDF. A PDF is a picture of pages, not a screenplay Scriptr can edit.
- Word (
.docx). Save as plain text first, or paste the text.
How Scriptr reads your file
- Fountain: scene headings, action, characters, dialogue, parentheticals and transitions follow the Fountain rules.
- Text: for a Script, lines are read as screenplay elements where they follow screenplay layout. For a Story, blank lines separate paragraphs.
- Markdown:
#headings become chapter titles, and emphasis is kept.
Scriptr always shows a preview, with any warnings, before it creates anything.
