Importing an existing screenplay or story
Bring a screenplay or story into a new Scriptr project from a Fountain, text or Markdown file, or by pasting it in.
Import creates a new project from writing you already have. It does not add to an existing project.
Import your work
- Choose Import when you start a new project, or Import on a Project Home.
- Choose a file, or paste the text into the box.
- Choose whether it becomes a Script or a Story:
- Fountain files can only become a Script.
- Markdown files can only become a Story.
- Plain text can become either.
- Check the preview. Scriptr shows how many scenes or chapters it found, the first blocks it read, and any warnings.
- Select Import as Script or Import as Story.
Nothing is created until you confirm the preview.
What can be imported
- Script: Fountain (
.fountain,.spmd) or screenplay text (.txt). - Story: text (
.txt) or Markdown (.md,.markdown). - Up to 2 MB per import.
Final Draft (.fdx), PDF and Word files cannot be imported yet. If your screenplay is in Final Draft, export it as Fountain from Final Draft first. More detail is in Supported import formats.
