How PDF and Fountain exports behave

PDF is for reading and sending. Fountain is for taking your screenplay to another app. Here is what each keeps.

PDF

  • A fixed layout: US Letter pages, Courier 12 pt, standard screenplay margins, so page count tracks screen time the way readers expect.
  • Title page with the title and “written by” your name.
  • Page numbers from page 2.
  • Characters & Places links and Co-writer proposals are never included.

Fountain

  • Plain text with Fountain’s markup, including title page fields for the title and author.
  • Bold, italic and underline use Fountain’s **, * and _ markers, so a screenplay exported and imported again keeps its emphasis.
  • Opens in Fountain-aware apps such as Highland, Slugline and Final Draft (via Fountain import).

Exporting from a phone

Export works in mobile review mode too. See Using Scriptr on mobile.
