Change a line’s element or style, and move through scenes, acts and chapters, without leaving the keyboard.

Formatting

Writing tools change the line the caret is on:

  • Script: Scene Heading, Action, Character, Dialogue, Parenthetical, Transition.
  • Story: Paragraph, Heading, Quote, Scene break.

They act at once and use the editor’s undo history, so ⌘ Z (Ctrl Z on Windows) reverses them. In Script, Tab and Enter also move between elements as you type. See Writing a screenplay.

  • Go to scene, Go to act (Script) and Go to chapter (Story) list the structure; choosing one moves the caret there and closes Tools.
  • Search screenplay and Search story find text across the whole manuscript. Matches show their scene or chapter; Find next moves on, until No further match.
