Recovering recent writing and how autosave works
Scriptr saves as you type and keeps a recovery copy in your browser, so writing is not lost when the connection drops or someone else saves.
There is no Save button. Scriptr saves your writing shortly after you stop typing, and the top bar shows the save state.
What the save states mean
| What you see | What it means |
|---|---|
| Saving… | Your latest changes are being saved. |
| Edited with a time | Everything is saved. |
| Offline — saved locally | You are offline. Your writing is kept in this browser and saved when you reconnect. |
| Couldn’t save remotely — local copy preserved | The save did not reach Scriptr. Your writing is kept in this browser. Use the retry option, or keep working while Scriptr tries again. |
| Remote revision changed — local copy preserved | Someone else saved a newer version. Scriptr stops editing here and keeps your copy, so nothing is overwritten. Reload to see the newer version. |
The recovery copy
Scriptr keeps a copy of unsaved writing in this browser. If the page closes before a save completes, Scriptr offers the local copy (Restore) the next time you open that manuscript in the same browser.
The recovery copy exists only in that browser. It is not available on another computer, and clearing your browser’s site data removes it.
If writing seems to be missing
- Do not clear your browser data.
- Reopen the manuscript in the same browser you were writing in.
- If Scriptr offers Restore, choose it.
- If nothing is offered, contact support with the project name and roughly when you last wrote.
Version history is not available to writers yet.
