Generating custom speech

Type a test line and hear it in a voice. Test lines are never added to your screenplay.

Your own line lets you hear a line that isn’t in the script yet: a character who hasn’t spoken, a line you are still working out, or a difficult word.

Perform a test line

  1. In Voice Studio, under Try a line, choose Your own line.
  2. Type the line. It is set in Courier and marked Test line · not added to your script.
  3. Choose the voices, then perform it.

It never changes your screenplay

A test line lives only in Voice Studio. It doesn’t add dialogue, create a scene or change the character’s lines. To use it, write it in Script.

Lines from Co-writer

When Co-writer suggests dialogue for a character with a voice, it can offer a test performance. Suggested lines are marked Not in your script, and nothing changes until you accept them.

Writing lines that perform well

  • Write the line as it would be spoken. A full stop lands; a comma carries on; an ellipsis trails.
  • Spell an unusual name the way it sounds if a voice stumbles over it.
  • Keep directions out of the line; put them in a parenthetical in Script.
